"OSTEND SPIRIT" former P & O "PRIDE OF CALAIS" on her way to the scrapyard

the 1987 built PRIDE OF CALAIS is now on her way to scrap as the "OSTEND SPIRIT". The ship served P & O for 25 years on the Dover/Calais service, she was transferred to TRANSEUROPA FERRIES in February of this year, sailed various times on the ship, last one was back in February this year, everything seemed so promising at the time, it wasn't to be and she is now on her way to Aliaga in Turkey, where she is due this tuesday, 12.11.2013, the ship as a sign of her still good qualities is sailing on her own power.

  1. She's currently doing circuits of the Aegean Sea at 18 knots, burning off what fuel she has left before being beached.

There is nothing wrong with this ship and to scrap her is an absolute disgrace. If it is true that P&O would not entertain any offers to purchase the ship, apart from those from shipbreakers, then they should be ashamed of themselves. It's enough to make one weep. Scrapping Pride of Dover - even after the state P&O let her get in - was bad enough, this is worse. Yes, I am looking at this from the point of view of a ship enthusiast and not more pragmatically, but to hell with pragmatism.

  2. It is a disgrace indeed Ship-Photo, when I sailed on her in February this year the state that P&O left her was ridiculous, the crew worked so hard to keep her going, regardless of everything she was in a very good state of preservation, at 26 she is far from being old, nevertheless her state of conservation was compromising, a lot of money would be needed to keep her in ship shape and the pay load was very insufficient, scarcely any passengers and cargo, today cross channel we have the new P&O Ferries and BF, the rest is history.
