At Ijmuiden onboard "KING SEAWAYS" ready for sea

"KING SEAWAYS" had just finished loading and was secure for sea at Ijmuiden, when I took these photos, the tradition associated with DFDS's cruise ferries departures, the band playing on ( Tape recording ) and the sound of the ship's whistle is well alive, a tradition that passengers really like, hope DFDS will keep it for long, it's romantic and nautical, Vitor Francisco 26.2.2018

"PRINCESS SEAWAYS" leaving Ijmuiden

"PRINCESS SEAWAYS" is seen here leaving Ijmuiden on her way to Newcastle in the UK, the ship looks rather smart in her new livery, during recent dry dock, just over two days that was all it took to paint the ship with the new colours, it is always a question of taste of course, but I believe she now looks much nicer than her sister on the same route, the KING SEAWAYS, which is still sporting the colours of previous livery, these photos were taken on Sunday, 25.2.2018, I can't remember to ever felt that cold, the temperature inside my car was showing - 3, which really seemed more like - 15 with the wind, Vitor Francisco

"KING SEAWAYS" arriving Ijmuiden

"KING SEAWAYS" arriving Ijmuiden this last Monday from Newcastle in the UK, the ship recently went to dry dock to have some work done on her propeller shafts, which will reduce her fuel consumption, four days only, the time needed for the works to be carried out, as for the new DFDS livery, we will have to wait for next dry docking, photos Vitor Francisco 26.2.2018

VAL DE LOIRE remembered

Every now and again I remember and miss the years I sailed on monthly basis on VAL DE LOIRE, she will always be a special ship for me, 57 times I had the immense pleasure of sailing this fantastic ship, today still cruising for DFDS as the KING SEAWAYS, the vast majority of my trips on the ship were from Plymouth to Santander or the other day round, we were "pals" sailing the Bay of Biscay and the memories and stories we share are unique and unforgettable, there is always a great deal of emotion and sentiment to write a few words about VAL DE LOIRE, today I remembered her once again after checking her progress on Marine Traffic, she is now at Gdansk undergoing a refit, also at Gdansk is another very special ship to me, the BRETAGNE, still sailing for BRITTANY FERRIES.

"PRINCESS SEAWAYS" arriving Ijmuiden in the Netherlands

"PRINCESS SEAWAYS" was built in 1986 as the PETER PAN, today the ship is owned and operated by DFDS on the Newcastle to Ijmuiden route, she sails from North Shields, six miles north of the city of Newcastle in the evening and gets to Ijmuiden about 25 miles from Amsterdam the following morning, together with KING SEAWAYS these ships operate a daily service connecting the UK with the NETHERLANDS. The photos selected for this "post" show the ship arriving at Ijmuiden and were taken on the 27th of October 2016. I have sailed this year five times on the ship, she is a fabulous cruise ferry offering passengers an excellent service, throughout the ship there are marvellous exhibits of former DFDS ships, she has a proper ship's ambiance, I can't get enough of her and her sister, the KING SEAWAYS.

"PRINCESS SEAWAYS" cruising at 16 knots

"PRINCESS SEAWAYS" of DFDS is seen here during her final approach to Ijmuiden, the ship was cruising at 16 knots just about an hour before reaching the breakwater of the Port of Ijmuiden, nearing the end of her crossing from Newcastle in the UK, it was a night of some movement when the ship encountered force 7 winds, early morning on our approach, we were greeted with a wonderful warm sunshine for the delight of the passengers, many passengers on board, the ship was nearly full, which is always very good to register, photos 21.10.2016

IJMUIDEN fishing vessels photography

Every time I am at Ijmuiden after disembarking my cruise ferry from the UK, last Friday was the "PRINCESS SEAWAYS, I had the opportunity for some ship spotting, I just love to spend some time photographing the fishing vessels, they are always plenty and so inviting, Friday was the day that many returned from a week at sea, fishermen going home for the weekend, before returning to sea on Monday, not an easy life, as one of the fishermen was telling me, we both watched his vessel maneuvering, last photo in this selection, taken 21.10.2016

"COTES DES FLANDRES" the new DFDS ship operating on the Dover to Calais route

"COTES DES FLANDRES" is one of the two new ships operated by DFDS on the Dover to Calais service, they are in fact not new, COTE DES FLANDRES was introduced in 2005 and her sister ship, COTES DES DUNES, four years earlier, I have sailed on both many times when they were sailing first for SEAFRANCE and after to MY FERRYLINK, last year both ships were laid-up for the second time, before joining DFDS. "COTES DES FLANDRES" was built by CHANTIERS DE L'ATLANTIQUE at Saint-Nazaire and first introduced in 2005 as the SEAFRANCE BERLIOZ, following the demise of her operator SEAFRANCE in 2012, she was laid-up awaiting new life, which happened the same year, a new Company was created to operate the ships, MY FERRYLINK, ownership also transferred to EURO-TRANSMANCHE, following a not very successful career, she was once again laid-up until DFDS decided to operate the ship in 2015. COTES DES FLANDRES and her sister were fully refit, changed liveries and brand new passenger amenities also were added, the ships are still registered in France and are manned by French crews. Last week I had the opportunity of sailing on COTES DES FLANDRES twice, first impression was, how beautiful she looks with the new DFDS livery with a much improved logo and very smart letters on their hulls, as for the amenities, I was disappointed at first, the ship lost her charming interiors of the past, they looked even somber in some places and bland, but and this is a big but, she is still a work in progress, overall the ship will be much improved surely in the coming months, she's only been in service for about six months, nevertheless for a ship that was completely rebuilt, she looks really smart and very well "remastered" to use a new term. COTES DES FLANDRES doesn't have a "La Carte Restaurant" anymore, she has in fact two self-service restaurants, photos above, the focus for DFDS on the route is without question the Freight, as a result she has the most magnificent "drivers lounge" I have ever seen on any ferry, the facility includes private access to an outside deck, for a touch of luxury the way to travel is the "Premium Lounge", for an extra cost of £12, passengers can have exclusive use of the lounge and help themselves to pasties, soft drinks and newspapers, last two photos on this post. One final comment for the paying customers aboard the ship, both Freight and tourists in much larger numbers compared to the previous operator, a good sign, hope the new employment will flourish and has a bright future, healthy competition is needed on the route.
