"CABO SAN SEBASTIAN" new funnel conception

Reading a yesterday's comment from one of the regular visitors to this blog, I went back to 1972 when I first saw the new "CABO SAN SEBASTIAN" and remember that I was really surprised and pleased with this new funnel conception. The ship was built for YBARRA in 1972 by UNION NAVAL LEVANTE in Spain, she was 11.779 GRT and had a cruising speed of 19 knots, she served YBARRA LINES until 1981. The ship was scrapped in 2009 in Turkey under the name DONATELLA D' ABUNDO. I have great memories of this handsome little vessel, saw her several times in Barcelona, images above taken from brochures of my private collection

  1. Interesting images, particularly the cuy-away.

Something that came into mind from the recently-published history of the former Finnish shipping company Thomesto when seeing this entry: In 1979 Ybarra and Thomesto were negotiating for the sale of the CABO SAN JORGE the charter of the CABO SAN SEBASTIAN to Thomesto. Both ships would have been placed in service with Olau Line, with whom Thomesto were involved at the time (and were for a short time set to buy 50% of Olau Line). CABO SAN JORGE was to become the OLAU HOLLANDIA (under Finnish flag) and publicity material for this was already proced. The deal fell through in the end, Thomesto never bought a share in Olau and in the place of the CABOs newbuildings were delived to Olau instead. But it's fascinating to think of what might have been.

  2. Hi Kalle, something I didn't know. I have sailed once on the 1989 built OLAU HOLLANDIA and when she became P&O's PRIDE OF LE HAVRE 13 times, she had really nice interior decoration particulary when she was the OLAU HOLLANDIA, big shame P & O withdrawn the service Portsmouth to Le Havre in 2005, but of course glad she is still sailing

    Thank you, Vitor
